Teenage Sleep Deprivation
Are you a teenager facing a busy lifestyle revolving around school, parties and late nights just talking on the phone? Perhaps you might not be aware of how important getting as much as nine hours of sleep every day is. The fact is that during your teenage years, you are in a period of rapid growth and without receiving the necessary amounts of sleep, you just might miss out on the opportunity to grow as much as you could. Teenage sleep deprivation is sometimes not treated as seriously as it should be. After all, you might feel like you have all the energy in the world to focus on your interests. The hours you spend sleeping might seem like just a waste of time when there are other more interesting things to do, right?
What bad effects could teenage sleep deprivation cause you?
Your memory might not work as well as you need it to and this could greatly affect your studies in school. This problem is made worse by the fact that you often have to get up very early for school even after nights when you've worked all night on an important paper. This could mean that you've had only 3 to 4 hours of sleep. You might find your grades going down and you'll start to worry that you're just not as smart as you used to be. An experiment you could do is to compare just how easily you can remember things when you've had a good nine hours of sleep and your brain is fully switched on. Compare that to when you've had only 3 hours of sleep and you would see just how important sleep could be to you.
Lack of sleep could also cause you to have problems controlling your emotions. Often, mood swings are caused by an imbalance in your hormones caused by not having enough sleep. Your body would seem like in a state of flux because you're not giving it enough rest and time to adjust to the new hormones you are producing. When you have enough sleep, then you would feel more confident, more ready to face the new challenges of growing up.
Also, not getting enough sleep can cause you serious health problems. Because you are not able to sleep as much as you need to, your body's immune system could be sufficiently weakened. You might find yourself getting colds more often, suffering from fevers every couple of months. These could all be remedied by simply making sure you have enough sleep. When you have enough sleep, you feel refreshed and ready to shrug off any virus in the air. Who wants to spend the best years of his or her life stuck in bed and sick?
Teenage sleep deprivation can be very serious that is why it is best to give yourself enough time for rest every night. Being a teenager, everything might seem much more interesting than sleeping early but the thing to remember is that if you get enough sleep, you're much more able to enjoy the teenage years of your life.
