Ways to Remedy Insomnia
Insomnia is one of the most popular sleeping disorders in the world. A huge number of people have experienced insomnia at one point in their lives. Occasional or transient insomnia that afflicts people usually comes and goes, and it can be easily caused by changes in lifestyle (i.e. jetlag, or otherwise). There may be insomnia that last up to days or weeks, but there are also insomnia that can last for years. The problem with insomnia is that it can greatly affect the person’s productivity during the day. Disorientation, tiredness, and so on, can slow a person down at work or otherwise. But there are tips to overcome insomnia, and many of them can be easily done right at this moment. Although, since there are different kinds of insomnia, and there are obviously different kinds of people, some of these tips may or may not work. Some tips to overcome insomnia can even contradict each other. It all depends on what works for the person.
Though many have suggested that reading a book, watching television, or surfing the net can help someone fall asleep, some also advise to do the complete opposite. Instead, they advise to clear a person’s mind. Having any other activity can cause the brain to process information and linger for minutes or hours on, so instead the person fell less sleepy. Practicing certain breathing techniques can also help. A person can try lying down, supine, and making sure he or she is comfortable. Then slowly and deeply breathe in and out. Repeat the process until it completely relaxes and eases the body from anxiety, stress and tension. Besides listening to music (nature sounds, classical, etc), people can also try visualization.
Another technique to relax the body (not dissimilar with the breathing technique): a person can imagine that he or she is in a beautiful and serene place. The more smoothing the scenery imagined the more effective. Moreover, a person can try changing his or her sleeping hours. If he or she sleeps past midnight and wake up around noon, then it is best to adjust the sleeping time to better suit their lifestyle. Removing any forms of addiction can also help. Smoking, caffeine, and drugs can cause insomnia. One of the many tips to overcome insomnia is to have a healthier lifestyle.
Taking a warm bath or a massage can help as well. Having a snack (most especially oatmeal) or drinking a glass of warm milk, or non-caffeinated herbal tea (especially if it’s chamomile or lavender) can give a lethargic effect. Changing the room’s environment can also have a great effect. From the mattress to the lighting, from the scent to the furniture arrangement, anything that can make the room more comfortable is a plus. Acupuncture can also be an alternative.
Some of these tips can work, and there is also a chance none of these techniques would work. There are medications out there for insomniacs, but it is advisable to consult a doctor first, even if it’s herbal. Taking something orally can prove to be addictive or even dangerous.
